UP Launches E-Project Linking Campuses
To implement a seamless and integrated information and communications technology (ICT) in-frastructure among its 14 campuses nationwide, the University of the Philippines Monday launched its system-wide computerization project dubbed “e-UP” Monday at the UP Diliman campus in Quezon City.
“It is important that information is made available in all of the university through modern technology, like the use of computers, which is what e-UP is all about,” said UP president Dr. Alfredo Pascual said in his message before stakeholders present at the kick-off meeting and press launch of the project held at UP Diliman’s Executive House. “With an automated system being paced with and embedded in our processes, everything will be done quickly.” Set to partner with Smart Communications and Air 21 freight and cargo forwarding solutions provider, e-UP is expected to improve academic transactions, like enlisting for subjects and getting diplomas and transcripts of records, and information exchange, like access to e-journals. “With e-UP, we will be able to have all the data that we need in effective decision-making and management,” Pascual said. “We should be able to handle our costs very well, too.” Pascual said that before he became the university president, he was exposed to the issues and challenges that the prestigious institution was and still is facing. “Decision-making was based on assumptions. Feedback takes time,” he said, citing personnel actions, like the issuance of initial salaries of new employees, and procurement, which starts with approval and leads to actual delivery of items, as among those processes that take long periods. --MB LIGHTTPD
